How to use the Classic cargo carrier and
car clips as a "Car Back Carrier."
Our Car Back Carrier has been a hit and we're
sorry it's sold out for this summer.
With the help of our loyal and innovative customers,
we propose this alternative. Classic car back
carriers allows you to haul gear without aerodynamic
drag, saving you gas. And it is much easier to
load gear at a lower level.
Note: These directions are
guidelines. As is always the case, attaching
anything to the outside of the car requires your
skill, judgment, and knowledge. You are
responsible for the safe attachment of any product
purchased from this web site. Lakeland
Enterprises, dealers and affiliates bear no
responsibility for the attachment of any devise as
we can not be present to be sure safe procedures are
followed. ALSO NOTE...With a load of gear
against your rear door it will not be easy to open
in emergency situations. DO NOT carry people
or pets with only access thru the rear door if this
cargo system is used.
DIRECTIONS: PRINT THIS
PAGE. The 4 car clips
"J hooks" are attached in pairs with an
adjustable strap between. Hang each pair to
the top sides of your rear door and you will have
the straps forming a loop on each side. Adjust the
loops so they are about 24-28 inches appart.
Adjust the strap/loop lenght so the packed cargo
carrier rides at or above the rear bumper and below
the rear window. Hang the hooks on the steel frame
not on glass.
It will probably be easiest to partially fill the
Classic cargo carrier with some gear with the
opening facing upwards. You can place stiff
cardboard, plastic, or even cut out 3/8 inch
plywood to make a firm bottom to the bag (this is
optional). Place the bag in the loops open end
up. Pack the bag and close it per the
directions that come with the Classic. Don't
let the packed bag cover the rear window and block
your view.
With every Classic you get four sets of
StrapRight strapping system. Each set is two
pieces, often they come threaded together through
the ladder lock buckle so you can see how that
works. Unthread the one strap from the ladder
lock buckle. The other end of each strap piece
is a sewn loop. Place one loop inside the
other and pull the long end of the strap through
it's own loop. This connects the two pieces so
you have one long strap. Ladder lock buckle
and strap adjustor hardware at one end and straight
at the other end.
We recommend at least one or two long straps be
shut inside the rear door and wrapped around the
width of the bag. This cinches the bag and some of
the weight against the rear door. Other straps
can go under the bag and up to a luggage rack which
will also distribute some of the weight. We
make the straps very long so they work with all
vehicles. If you find them too long, you can
trim the ends (at an angle so they are easy to
thread and melt the trimmed ends with a lighter to
prevent fraying).
TEST the load and try this set up before you
begin your vacation so you are familiar with the
straps. While you are on your trip check the
straps and your load. Be careful not to let
the straps or bag hang on or near the exhaust
pipe. We suggest you limit the weight to
80-100 lbs. This is good for cloths, sleeping
bags, tents and the like. We do not recommend
you carry boxes of books, firewood, coolers filled
with ice and other heavy items.
